another flop

with the heat wave, i decided to make watermelon sorbet.  we got a watermelon for the last bbq n never got around to eat it…that was more than 2 weeks ago.  we thought it was still good…but after all is done it wasnt sweet enough…

so no recipe…but some prep pics…

i LOVE the microplane…so much better than the zester with little holes on it.  thanks coworkers!

this is the best juicer…thanx coworkers

puree watermelon with the hand blender…works so well…

too bad the final product didnt turn out well…will try again

chocolate sorbet

we’re finally unpacking wedding presents…n started to use them.  then i saw this…so i must try it…i didnt register an ice cream maker cuz it’s not something that i thought i would use often…but after this first try…i think i’ll be making frozen desserts every day!!!  it’s SO GOOD!!!  this recipe is perfect since i’m lactose intolerant….yummy

ingredients

2 1/4 cups (555ml) water
1 cup (200g) sugar
3/4 (75g) unsweetened dutch process cocoa powder
pinch of salt
6 ounces (170 g) bittersweet chocolate
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

any baker knows…it’s more accurate to measure by weight than volume…so i registered a food scale n i m in LOVE with it…

thanx cathy!!!

whisk 1 1/2 cups of water, sugar, cocao powder, and salt, bring to a boil while whisking and continue after boil for 45 seconds.  it will bubble up quite a bit.

remove from heat and stir in chocolate until it melts then add in vanilla extract and the remaing water. then blend it for 15seconds…i used the hand blender i got…thanx deanna!  chill the mixture

pour into the ice cream maker for about 25mins…thanx anna!

it wasn’t too firm when removed so chill the mixture for another couple of hours…we chilled for overnight and it was nice n hard.  we have a freezer that came with the house in the basement…n that thing is COLD!!!  the sorbet came out rock solid!!!

it was DECADENT!!!  the only description i have is it’s like a frozen brownie…since i used really rich chocolate…the sorbet came out super rich…n it was extremely smooth…so good…

flop…

Now that the house is cleaned and the kitchen is back in service…I’m back at baking…my friends commented how pretty I make my cookies n cakes…n for the lucky few that gets to taste them…they said they’re yummy (at least that’s what they tell me) but one thing I know is whenever I bring my baked goods to work…it’s gone by lunch time =P

But there are always flops that I never wrote about. This is one of those flops I did that didn’t turn out to be too bad n still presentable.

One of my coworkers which I like to categorize as friend is relocating n thus leaving us. Her husband got a job at the new location and as any good wife would do…she is relocating with the husband. We will miss her dearly…n I helped plan a breakfast and luncheon to bid her farewell…

Back in april…it was cupcakes week on Martha…I saw this segment…n fell IN LOVE with them and wanted to make them ever since. So I decided to make these for the breakfast…

This is what it’s supposed to look like….but cuz I didn’t read the instructions correctly…I forgot to put in the lollipop sticks before the chocolate dip dries n by the time i realized it…all of them were dried (sam suggested drilling a hole to insert the sticks..i told him no)…so no more lollipops…I didn’t wanna spend any more time on it…so just made them into chocolate dipped cake balls…

Didn’t take a pic of it cuz I was so disappointed…but I’ll def redo this one =P  mebbie a treat for our housewarming party???

They were actually a big hit at the party and my coworkers thought I baked the cakes in circles and asked me how it’s done…such engineers. I must say, deconstructing the cake is half the fun =D

老火湯 – watercress soup

西洋菜湯 – watercress chinese soup – my favorite….

blanch the meat….chicken bones n pork bones…when i asked y…she just said is to remove the meat smell/taste…dispose water

rinse meat with cold water

wash the watercress – i had 3 bundles

bring another batch of water to a boil…put in the meat…some red dates (my mom said to put in 4…but sam’s mom stopped by when i was doing this n toss in more…yes…the soup came out super sweet!!!), n some chinese nuts…n some carrots…

bring the whole mixture to a boil…then simmer for 2hrs min…

the pot was near full from the beginning…2 hrs later…it was half filled…n the veggie is no longer green…n the soup is READY…salt to taste…n it was DELICIOUS!!!!  we only had 2 bowls of soup after all is done….

yes…sam is a very lucky guy =D

more blooms…

with the wedding approaching, the house is a mess and we don’t even have time to do anything and baking is no exception.

I had plans to start a summer garden and a vegetable/herb garden but there is just no time or room to do so.  I’ll share some of the spring garden which is slowly fading away as summer approaches.

not everything I planted sprouted, the anemones didn’t sprout at all and the irises in the center seems unwillingly to bloom..

pink hyacinths…

purple and white hyacinths…

some muscari…grape hyacinths…

some tulipas…

mix purple tulips…

Some simple arrangement I did…over 3 dozens of tulips =)

and looks what’s blooming…yays!

i *heart* spring

i made a common gardening mistake…i think it was the engineer in me that made the grid….apparently that’s not how you’re supposed to garden…but instead cluster and group the blubs together for a more natural look…rite now, i got rows of flowers…boooo…but still pretty

the grid

last fall…

the spacings on the package seems to be too far off….next year…i promise the garden will be nicer, i was pretty glad that they sprouted since this is my first time gardening, although the anemones didn’t sprout =(  5 out of the 6 isn’t too bad…

cant wait till they’re in full bloom…planted different types of hyacinths…

my grape hyacinths (muscari)…i think i planted it too low =( well…got to learn from mistakes…

i got a full bed of daffodils…n since i’m rarely home during the day to enjoy them…decided bring them inside…i thought it would be hard for me, cutting flowers off the ground but instead it was quite a liberating experience.  now it’s put on a pedestal for us to appreciate them even more…there’s something very cheery about daffodils…it brings me joy everytime i look at them n they fit perfectly in my yellow kitchen…i cant believe there were over 3 dozens daffodils in the garden…

our cherry blossom tree hasnt bloom yet…sam said it mite not bloom the first yr it’s planted…booo….but our neighbor’s is blooming…i’m so tempted to bring my scissors n chop off some branches…cherry blossoms r gorgeous n i got the PERFECT vases for it…

i really want to start my vegetable/herb and summer flower garden this spring…but with the wedding planning & training…i barely have time to do anything recreational….so that has to wait till next spring…i wanna be martha…cooking out of her own garden…

lagging…

i just started a new job…causing less time in the kitchen…plus the kitchen was held hostage by sammy due to installing recessed lighting….

now that it’s done…i’ll probably think of making something in the next few days =D
